How to Make Alkaline Water at Home
Before we talk about how to make alkaline water, let’s cover a little bit about what exactly alkaline water is. Keep in mind though that there are many ways to create alkaline water, the quality will vary greatly depending on which method you use.
What is Considered Alkaline Water?
Alkaline water is pretty much water which has a pH level of about 7.4 or higher on the pH scale (tap water is about 7 or lower which is slightly acidic).
Did you know that your body’s always fighting to neutralize excess acidity in order to maintain a pH balance of around 7.356 (which is slightly alkaline)? This is considered the ideal pH for a healthy internal environment.
Ionized Alkaline Water vs. Alkaline Water
There are many forms of alkaline water but when it comes to quality, ionized water has many advantages over regular alkaline water. With ionized water, you’re not only getting incredible filtration but also the ability to pretty much obtain your desired level of pH water.
A good water ionizer has the ability to bring water from pH 3 all the way up to pH 12+. This is not feasible with any other method of creating alkaline water as we’ll cover later on.
The biggest benefit of ionized water over regular alkaline water is the low-level ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential) which basically gives ionized water a powerful antioxidant property.
5 Most Common Ways of Creating Alkaline Water
The 6 most common ways of creating alkaline water are with baking soda, alkaline tablets, alkaline pH drops, lemon water, a water ionizer and with alkaline water filters. The quality you get will depend on the method you choose.
There are both pros and cons for each method, but to decide which one’s better for you will depend on your lifestyle and preference. We’ll do our best to point out the important aspects of each so that you can make an informed decision.
Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)
One of the easiest ways to make alkaline water is to simply add baking soda to it. However, keep in mind that this is definitely not an effective method.
The alkaline water produced in this way will probably taste really bad (unless you enjoy the taste of water and baking soda combined).
It is, however, a very cheap way to alkalize your water and it’s also very easy to do.
The step above baking soda is alkaline tablets. The reason we don’t recommend using just baking soda is that we don’t feel its a good idea to rely on just one type of bicarbonate as your only alkaline mineral, even if it’s just for supplementing (and not used as a long-term water treatment option).
There are alkaline mineral supplements available that have the much better range of alkaline minerals and do a better job than baking soda.
Pros of Alkaline Mineral Tablets
- Very cheap
- Easy to take
- Great way to give your body a quick boost once or twice a day
- More alkaline minerals than baking soda
Cons of Alkaline Mineral Tablets
- Not rational to take more than once or twice a day
- Not recommended to consume too many minerals in a single day
- Requires a lot of minerals to create high pH water
- Meant to be used only as a supplement, not a water treatment solution
If you plan to take this route and understand that alkaline minerals are meant to be used as a supplement and not a long-term water treatment solution, then we recommend checking out pH Ion’s Alkaline Minerals. It’s a top quality supplement and contains an excellent mix of bicarbonates.
Lemon water is exactly as the name suggests, it’s just water with lemon juice squeezed in it. Lemon is a great way to raise the alkalinity of your drinking water and it tastes great too!
Even though lemons are in fact acidic outside of the body, it actually becomes alkaline once consumed. Check out this quick video posted by Ross from Energies for Life explaining the reason behind this.
- Easy to make
- Helps flush your system
- Contains some nutrients too
- Doesn’t contain any sugar, so it’s all alkaline
- Not really a good sustainable source of alkaline for an entire day
- Does not have incredibly alkalizing effects like ionized water
- No filtration
- Not everyone likes lemon water without additives
Alkaline pH Drops
Adding alkaline pH drops to your drinking water is another cheap and convenient way to turn your water alkaline.
These drops can bring your regular tap water to a pH of about 8-9 on average giving you most of the known benefits of alkaline water. However, this method does have a point of diminishing return. On top of that, you also don’t receive the filtration and antioxidant benefits achieved through water ionization.
If you’re just looking for a quick way to increase the pH level of your water and already plan on using some sort of filter, then the alkaline drop is a fantastic approach.
Although there are many companies that sell alkaline water drops, we found Alkavision’s Plasma pH drops and Alkaline’s Alkaline pH Booster to be the most effective out of the bunch.
Alkaline Water Filters
Water Ionizing Machines
A water ionizer produces ionized water by running your regular water through positive and negative electrodes, a process is known as electrolysis. This creates both alkaline and acidic water (they’re usually separated into different chambers).
The alkaline water is great for drinking and cooking while the acidic water works great as a cleanser for your hair and skin.
If you’re looking for a long-term and sustainable way to create ionized water, then you should definitely consider an alkaline water ionizer.
A water ionizer not only creates high-quality alkaline water, but it also filters out toxins, chemicals and produces low-level ORP water (antioxidant water) which promotes excellent health as mentioned earlier in this article.
If you choose this path then you should be aware that there are 2 viable options available depending once again on your lifestyle.
There are home water ionizers which easily attach to your current tap water system and create powerful health-promoting water whenever you need it and portable water ionizers which are easy to carry around with you and gets the job done no matter where you are.
Dual filtration is a very important aspect of alkaline filters.
The first level helps to remove contaminants (water pathogens, viruses, E.coli, chlorine, arsenic, asbestos, chromium, etc. to name a few) in the water down to 0.01 micron versus 30 microns for a regular tap water filter. The second level of filtration helps to maintain proper ion and electrolyte balance thus adding to the waters stability and purity.
Portable Alkaline Sticks
Alkaline water sticks is another convenient way to convert your water into alkaline antioxidant water. Its perfect for people who move around a lot and need a cheap, affordable yet effective way to enjoy the benefits no matter where they are.
Now that you’re aware of the various methods of making alkaline water, please keep in mind that there really isn’t a “perfect” method set in stone. Everyone is different and a method that work’s for someone might not work for you.
Make your decision by considering which one will be most beneficial to you long term and you really can’t go wrong.
As for us, we recommend alkaline tablets, drops and lemon juice for those who are looking for a quick boost every once in a while.
And for those who like or require the convenience of being able to take the power of alkaline water with them no matter where they go, a portable water ionizer if your best bet.
